Voice of the People: Rock Logic -July 8

Over the weekend, I had the chance to catch-up with hiphop veteran Stik-E (from Stik-E and The Hoods) also known as “Rock Logic” who rocked the mic during the 1990s with his signature club boppers “Shake Watcha Mama Gave Ya, “ Say Whut,” and “The Weave Song.” If you guys,(namely the "youngins") do not know who Rock Logic is, you cannot claim to be die-hard hiphop fans.

Capturing the essence of the urban-NYC 90s experience in his songs- cornrows, doorknockers, baggy clothes and block parties- Rock Logic has transcended across socioeconomic and racial boundaries, as he has gained national fame and recognition among diverse and large audiences, even extending beyond American soil. Rock Logic and I engaged in a flowing conversation about his origins as a rap artist and how the hip-hop scene has changed dynamically from the 90s to the new millennium.

At the age of 19, Rock Logic ignited his rapping career ; any opportunity he was given to lace a crowd with hot lyrical flow, he was in on it. In any case, I asked him about the current wave of the hip hop music industry and how he, as a rap artist, facilitates to the musical needs of the new millennium audience. Rock stated that “years ago, it was a lot better…it was a moneymaking business. Not to say that I’m salty, but [the industry] was a lot better.” He further explained that back in the day, it was all about raw talent.
Nowadays, catchy lyrics as in Souljah Boy’s latest hit, “Turn My Swag On,’ seem to be the modern staple that will equally get the crowd hype as “Shake Whatcha Mama Gave Ya” did during the “old skool” golden era. Rock Logic also explained that he approaches his audience of 2009 somewhat different than he would back in the day- “ Now, I wouldn’t go to a club and say put ya hands in the air, and wave em like you just don’t care. I would say, if you bling blingin tonight say [I got money!]…my new demographic is the younger crowd.” Isn't this the truth!

Currently, Rock Logic tours internationally with his group Stik-E and The Hoods, as well as the legendary M.O.P. He also participates in club events production and promotion, closely working with hip-hop producer and event planner Chris Medina and his camp 238Beats Entertainment Group. Not only is Rock Logic a talented, multifaceted hip-hop guru, but he is a compassionate individual, supporting the growth, development and success of NYC’s youth. He encourages all young people out there, who aspire to be music artists and/or involved in the entertainment industry to aim for the stars, quoting after his close friend Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent, "put yourself in a position to recieve your blessing."
